My Top Ten Female Villains in Anime and Manga

Though many great anime villains are made of male characters, such as Aizen, Naraku, Blackbeard and Orochimaru. it turns out that there are also a good number of female anime villains, who prove that they are just as bad, as twisted and much of a magnificent bastard like the other prominent male anime villains.

So here are My Top Ten Female Villains in Anime and Manga

10. Kaguya Ootsuki (Naruto)

Kaguya Ootsuki, also known as the Mother of all chakra, the Rabbit Goddess and the Demon, is the first chakra user in the world of Naruto. Her goal is unify all of chakra within her, essentially becoming the most powerful being. Unfortunately she was sealed by her two sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, when they found out, how many people she is actually trying to sacrifice in order to obtain more power. Though her actions can somewhat justified as she was preparing for another threat, she’s still evil due to the huge number of people she sacrificed and is planning to sacrifice in order to become more powerful. Not, to mention that the said threat are also her own followers as well, so in the end of the day she is just a power hungry monster who will devour anyone, whether they be family or clan members just to become the sole owner of all chakra.

Despite all this Kaguya is not pure evil, just blinded by her hunger for power, since her original goal was to bring peace and she did love her sons, at least in the past. Hence why she is only number 10,

9. Sharon Vineyard aka Vermouth (Detective Conan)

Though, I was very hesitant to involve Vermouth in here, since unlike the rest she isn’t really insane or a force of evil, but she is also not a pawn, since she pretty much has her own plans for herself most of the time. However she does deserve a spot, since among female villains she is one of the most manipulative and has great survival skills against the heroes of the story. She has shown that she manipulate, several child genius detectives, CIA, FBI, Japanese Police and even her own fellow Black Organization members.

As a matter of fact she is the only member of the organization who almost killed Conan, and if she didn’t had a soft spot for him she would’ve succeeded. Not to mention the great detective had help from the FBI, Japanese Police and his friends during that time. The only reason that Vermouth isn’t higher in this list is because of her soft spot for Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri. Nevertheless, Vermouth is one woman that you don’t want to mess with.

8 . Kujiragi Kasane from Durarara

Kujiragi Kasane, is what you can call a human and monster trafficker, in that she sells both humans and supernatural creatures in the black market. Though, she calls herself Kujiragi Kasane, this is not her real name, but a name she stole from someone else. According to her the real Kujiragi Kasane is already living somewhere overseas. Kujiragi Kasane is the main antagonist of the second part of the Durarara series, originally thought of as a secretary of Yodogiri Jinnai (the presumed main antagonist of the series) it turns out that Kujiragi is only using Yodogiri Jinnai as a cover and is the real leader of the organization. She uses several people to use the name of Yodogiri Jinnai while she pretends to be the secretary.

Though, always serious and seemingly emotionless most of the time, Kujiragi Kasane is not without a sense of humor as she likes to wear cat ears if she have time, since she thinks that it is cute. Despite her actions of using so many people for her business, she is not a complete monster, as she is both a victim and a mastermind. Kujiragi was sold by her mother to the original Yodogiri Jinnai and was raised by him to be a criminal hence, for her this is the only way of living that she knows of, so when the original Yodogiri died, she kept on using his name as a scapegoat to keep people from tracking her. She sees herself as a professional (and she is!) in the black market business and is even willing to give advice to others on “how to live as a monster” a somewhat chilling advice as she says it all with a pure emotionless serious face.

7. Eto Yoshimura (Tokyo Ghoul)

As the main villain of Tokyo Ghoul and a Major antagonist in Tokyo Ghoul Re, Eto definitely deserves a spot. She is the founder the Ghoul organization known as the Aogiri Tree with her own army of Ghouls that can stand even against the strong members of the CCG. Since Eto’s goal is a HUGE SPOILER, I won’t tell it here. Eto is known as the True One Eyed Owl one of the strongest known Ghoul and thought by many to be the One Eyed King though she denies this. Eto is a half human and half ghoul, yet cannibalizes both, yes she eats both humans and ghouls. As the founder of Aogiri she is related and responsible for many of the conflicts that happened in the series, not to mention that she was willing to sacrifice her own father to further her own goals, allowing him to be even used as a test subject.

6. Esdeath (Akame Ga Kill)

If there was ever someone who had an encyclopedic knowledge about torture then that would be Esdeath. Esdeath is major antagonist in the Akame Ga Kill series, known as the “Strongest General” of the Empire, she is also a believer in the “Survival of the fittest” ideology. But she is not in this list because of her power, nor her goal, since her only goal so far right now is to obtain Tatsumi. She is in this list since she is a freaking sadist, one of the most sadistic characters in anime so far. Some of Esdeath’s preferred method of Torture alive is being boiled alive, being frozen alive, impalement and probably many more. This sadistic tendency of her alone is enough to consider as one of the best female anime villains for me. 

5. Charlotte LinLin also known as Big Mom (One Piece)

One of the Four Emperors of the New World, this makes her one of the most powerful character in the entire series of One Piece alone. Her power aside, Big Mom is good at what she does, being a pirate. To me, she even looks like as one of the most professional pirate in the entire series as according to her “No pirate will ever compromise on the thing that she wants”, if she wants it she will do everything in her power to get it, and her subordinates know it all too well. Her information is also as frightening as hell, whenever she targets someone she will make sure to obtain every single bit of information about that person. Their lives, their friends, their families, their houses and etc. With her status as one the Four Emperors, she can get information that she wants through intimidation alone, their fear of her.

Originally thought by fans as one of the kinder Yonkou’s like Whitebeard, Big Mom is slowly disproving this as she conducts cannibalism, cruelty, ruthlessness and a manipulative side that is not apparent when she first appeared. It is quite clear that Big Mom still has more aces up her sleeves with twisted goals.

4. Ignes Kravei (Noblesse)

Ignes Kravei, the daughter of Roctic Kravei, one of traitor clan leaders, and she is the sole reason that her father betrayed his friends, clan, country and own sworn Lord. So that he can protect her. From what? Well, from facing judgement. Ignes Kravei is guilty of several crimes against the Noble race, known to humans as vampires. Ignes is obsessed to increase her own power to Body Modification, she plans to achieve this sacrificing as many humans as she needs for her cruel and brutal experiments, whether they are, Nobles, werewolves or humans that Nobles have sworn to protect. Ignes, so called “experiments” is much closer to torture than an actual experiment as many of her victims who are not strong enough simply die due to her methods. And if they do die, she simply label them as failed experiments. Even worst when her father who sacrificed everything for her died protecting her, she didn’t even turn back to help him and runaway herself, she was even happy that he was finally dead and that she is now the new clan leader of the Kravei Clan. Ignes Kravei is definitely one sick female villain.

3. Rachel (Tower of God)

Unlike others in this list, Rachel is not a general, a scientists or a powerful being. One can even call her a “normal girl” at first look. She is the main protagonist Baam’s first friend. So why is she in here and is even rank highly on this list. Well, Rachel only has one goal, to climb the Tower and make her wish come true, pretty ordinary right? Well Baam with Rachel being his only friend, followed Rachel in the Tower. To Rachel’s surprise she failed in the very first test while Baam succeeded, but after failing, she immediately hide from Baam and he did not know that Rachel was even present during the first test. Baam then met Rachel again and she can’t even speak or walk, after that Baam did everything for Rachel and actually passed the entire test and manage to climb the tower with his new friends and Rachel.

To Baam surprise when it was just them, Rachel betrayed him by stabbing him and climbing the Tower all by herself.  Turns out Rachel is not really a good friend of Baam but a very ruthless and manipulative woman who will use anyone so that she will be the one who gets to climb the tower. After that Rachel has allied herself with a mysterious and dangerous organization. Rachel is a dangerous villain due to her extreme ruthlessness and manipulative nature, she already fooled several people who was planning to use her or trick her. Not only, despite what she did Baam is still chasing her wanting an explanation for her actions, yet Rachel has only one thing in mind, and that is to keep using Baam for her own advantage.

2. Medusa (Soul Eater)

Medusa is considered by many to be one the greatest female villains of all time and a candidate for “Worst Mom in Anime”. Medusa is a Mad Scientist by nature, probably the best female Mad Scientist in Anime and Manga. But unlike other Mad Scientist, Medusa is also an evil genius, as she learns from her mistakes, knows when to run and is willing to wait for the right time to strike. Medusa considers everyone to be her test subject even her own child. Medusa’s only form of love is only towards Dr. Stein though even this is somewhat doubtful as she has no problem killing him should he get in the way of her plans. Aside from her twisted view of evolution and progress, Medusa’s goal is also to revive Asura, a very dangerous being, the embodiment of Death’s fear. As she believes that his revival is also a part of evolution.

1    1.   Arba a.k.a Ren Gyokuen (Magi)

Arba one of the three Magi of King Solomon is for me the greatest Female villain in both anime and manga. First, she killed her two sons, her husband. Then married her late husband’s brother since he is his brother’s successor, she then slowly killed her new husband through poison. After that with no proper successor, and the crowned not yet coming of age the empire has no choice but to appoint her as the new empress and head of the entire Kou Empire. Her only son who survive hates her with passion and has trained all his life to kill her. When he finally became powerful to take on an entire army on his own with his djinn equip. he finally attempted to kill her with his own hands. Except she is a magician that is much, much more powerful than himself and beats him like nothing and teased him up some more how weak and powerless he is. She is also responsible behind the scenes for the majority of war and conflict that is happening all around the world through her organization of evil magicians known as Al-Thamen by giving terrorist and warring nations with weapons known as Black Djinns.

Her goal is simple to revive her “father” her God known as Il-Illah who is now tainted with Black Rukh, and when revived will destroy the entire world by taking away every magic and life on planet. When she finally succeeded to revive Il-Illah who is about to destroy the world, she cries tears of joy. Finally she is the magician who betrayed Solomon in past and destroyed Alma Torran, a world where her former friends and allies resides. Arba is definitely the most evil and twisted female villain in anime and manga history.
